I love being a tourist in our own backyard. We live in Palm Beach County and there are so many great places to explore with our family. (P.S. you can read my Palm Beach County Summer Bucket List here). We recently broadened our horizons and took the Brightline train to visit the Museum of Discovery and Science in downtown Fort Lauderdale.
Taking Brightline to the Museum of Discovery and Science
This was our family’s first experience riding the Brightline and Aaron’s first time ever on a train. To say he was excited is an understatement. He thought he was going on “Thomas” (the train) and told us he would drive it himself.
Everything felt very clean and new. And the staff we met were friendly. Someone even gave Aaron a Brightline train pin when we were at the Ft. Lauderdale station.
Our Itinerary
Our Brightline train left West Palm Beach at 10:48 am and arrived in Fort Lauderdale at 11:23 am. The train station is only about a 10 minute walk to the Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS). We brought our stroller so we figured walking would be easiest. (If you plan on doing the same just keep in mind you’ll be crossing a busy road – Broward Blvd).
We got to Fort Lauderdale a little while before the museum opened. So we walked from the train station, passed the museum, and to Pizzacraft for lunch. We ordered cheese pizza, chicken wings, and a chicken parm sandwich to share. And of course our toddler wouldn’t eat any of it. I cannot recommend those chicken wings enough – so good!
The restaurant had live music playing outside so we paused for a little dance party and then made our walk back to the museum.
My mom took Aaron to MODS when she was babysitting in May and he immediately recognized it and said “Googoo (what he calls my mom) took me here!”
I grew up in Broward County so I’ve been to this museum many times as a kid. I love going there now with my own child!
We explored the museum for a few hours. We started downstairs in the area for younger kids. There is so much to see and do and I’m sure we’ll be making visits for years to come. Aaron mostly led the way – as he was very excited and not interested in letting us show him around.
The museum had interactive activities for kids of all ages. Aaron is still a little young for most of it but we look forward to bringing him back for years to come.
We even tried out a slime making activity but I’m not sure Aaron liked getting his fingers sticky.
After a few hours of playing and exploring at the museum, our toddler’s skipped nap was catching up to him.
We got back to the train station a little early and enjoyed the air conditioning and lounge area. Aaron fell asleep on the short walk back from the museum so we were happy to give him some time to rest before we boarded.
Aaron woke up in time to enjoy the train ride home. He was finally ready to eat some leftover pizza. The tables on the train really came in handy.
As our family adventure day was coming to an end we chatted with the group sitting across from us who were just starting their trip for a night out in downtown West Palm Beach.
